What Foundation Digging Involves

Foundation excavation is more precise than bulk earthworks — the dig needs to match the engineering drawings, not just approximate them. What’s involved depends on the footing system, the building type, and what’s in the ground.

Strip footing excavation For conventional residential construction, we dig strip footings to the specified depth and width — following the engineer’s plan and confirmed by survey pegs. Clean edges, correct depth, no loose material in the bottom.

Raft slab preparation For raft slabs on reactive or soft ground — common across much of Lake Macquarie — we excavate and trim the subgrade to the slab profile, ensuring the surface is free of organics, correctly levelled, and compacted to specification.

Pad footing excavation For post-frame buildings, commercial structures, and engineer-designed residential foundations, we excavate individual pad footings to the specified dimensions and bearing depth.

Stepped footings on sloped sites Where a site has grade, footings need to step down with the terrain. We work from the engineer’s stepped footing detail and excavate accordingly — clean, square, consistent step heights.

Soil Conditions and Why They Matter Here

Foundation design in the Hunter Region is heavily influenced by soil classification — and the Hunter Region has a wide range of soil types.

Class M and H reactive clay is widespread across Lake Macquarie and parts of Newcastle. Footings on reactive sites need to reach a specified depth below the active zone, and the excavation profile needs to match the engineer’s design precisely. Over-digging or leaving loose material in the bottom compromises the footing’s performance.

Soft and compressible soils near the Hunter River floodplain (Maitland, Rutherford, Thornton) can require deeper excavation to reach competent bearing ground, and sometimes require imported fill or ground improvement before a footing can be placed.

How deep do footings need to go in the Hunter Region? It depends on soil classification. On Class M or H reactive clay — common in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle — engineers typically specify 450–600mm or deeper to get below the active zone. Your structural engineer’s drawings specify the depth — we dig to it.

Do you dig to engineer’s drawings? Yes. We work from your structural engineer’s foundation plan and the surveyor’s pegs. If drawings aren’t yet available, we can’t accurately quote — foundation excavation is precision work, not an estimate job.

What happens if you hit rock? We’ll notify you immediately. Rock can be broken with appropriate equipment, but it changes the cost and timeline. We assess rock risk during site inspection and will flag it before we start.

Can you work near existing structures? Yes, but we assess carefully. Excavating adjacent to existing footings requires managing vibration, undermining risk, and access. We’ll advise on any constraints during the site assessment.

Do you do the compaction testing? We compact the subgrade as part of our work. Independent compaction testing (if required by your engineer or certifier) is typically arranged by the builder — we can recommend testing services if needed.
